THOMAS SCHÜTTE - EXPOSITION ET LIVRE

CAHIERS D'ART

Cahiers d'Art is pleased to present the first exhibition of Thomas Schütte in its gallery space. The exhibition follows the presentation of the book "Watercolors for Robert Walser and Donald Young" conceived by the German artist and published by Cahiers d'Art and presented for the first time on the occasion of Art Basel 2014.

Schütte's exhibition is composed of a series of 20 watercolours on paper painted in 2012 and 2013 along with an aluminium sculpture dedicated to Donald Young and inspired by Robert Walser's poems and of 7 prints specially produced for Cahiers d'Art (2014, Ed. 35).

As Walser had always been fascinated by watercolors and the particular effect they have on the human eye, Schütte has carefully chosen an extraordinarily moving selection of his own artwork, while simultaneously paying tribute to Walser, whom he considers one of his heroes. The ensemble of the watercolors is intimate such as moments taken from his everyday life as well as delicate, sometimes ironic and highly poetic. Th sculpture called Walser's Wife made of aluminium reminds us how wonderfully Schütte represents the woman features.

The whole project was called the Walser series and was Donald Young Gallery's last project: In the Spirit of Walser before the gallery closed in 2012.

The exhibition is accompanied by an unedited portfolio of 7 signed prints called "Untitled, 2014", edition of 35, as well as the book "Watercolors for Robert Walser and Donald Young". The first presentation of the book took place at Unlimited during Art Basel 2014 in a wood shed-library, Bibliotek, designed by Schütte specifically for Cahiers d'Art. The model is shown now at the gallery. Architecture has always been part of Shütte's practice.
