MADE IN ALGERIA, GENEALOGY OF A TERRITORY

MUCEM - MUSEE DES CIVILISATIONS DE L'EUROPE ET DE LA MEDITERRANEE (MARSEILLE)

Made in Algeria is the first major exhibition devoted to the representation of a territory, Algeria. Gathering an ensemble of maps, drawings, paintings, photographs and historic documents, it also presents works by contemporary artists who have surveyed the Algerian territory.

The exhibition demonstrates how cartographic invention accompanied the conquest of Algeria and its description. The itinerary unfolds in three timeframes: prior to conquest, colonisation, and from independence to the present. Among the pieces presented, are sound and audiovisual archives, works from major French and foreign museums, as well as new contemporary creations...and an ensemble of original maps, of rare aesthetic quality, is presented to the public for the first time.
