FREE FIGURATIONS - 1980S

FONDS HÉLÈNE & EDOUARD LECLERC

In the 1970s and early 1980s, an artistic movement spreads around the world under different names: Free figuration in France (Blanchard, Boisrond, Combas, Di Rosa, Viollet, Brothers Ripoulin...) ; Graffiti in the United States (Basquiat, Haring, Scharf...) ; Neue Wilde in Germany (Bach, Castelli, Fetting, Salome...); New Artists in the USSR (Afrika, Novikov, Sotnikov...).

The exhibition, Free figurations - 1980s, curated by Pascale Le Thorel, brings together more than 50 major international artists and emblematic of this scene. For the first time, alongside the Americans and Europeans, artists from the Russian scene and other parts of the world who work in the same spirit are presented.

The exhibition gathers more than 200 works, sometimes monumental, realized between 1979 and 1986, most often chosen with the artists. She evokes this universe through paintings, sculptures, films, videos, photos and archival documents.

Free Figurations - 80s, tells the different episodes of this story and is a testimony on this non-academic art, often provocative, inspired by popular culture, born in the street, in clubs, in magazines as much as in workshops and has a strong connection to rock, punk, comics and media.
