MARSEILLE-PROVENCE 2013 : BUILT TO RESIST BELLMER, ERNST, SPRINGER AND WOLFS AT CAMP DES MILLES

AIX-EN-PROVENCE - LE CAMP DES MILLES

Between September 1939 and July 1942, before it became a deportation camp for more than 2,000 Jewish men, women and children, sent to their deaths at Auschwitz, Camp des Milles first detained thousands of Germans considered as enemies; foreigners considered undesirable.

Among them, were many artists fleeing the Nazi regime and the country that they occupied. The works produced in this period by Hans Bellmer, Max Ernst, Ferdinand Springer and Wols, which compose this exhibition; reflect an artistic resistance against the harsh conditions imposed upon them.

This exhibition shows not only how these works constitute an act of intellectual and moral resistance to the political situation, but also the extremely difficult living conditions imposed on internees.
