OLA CUBA ! GARE SAINT SAUVEUR DE LILLE - LILLE3000

From April 19 to September 2, 2018, Gare Saint Sauveur will host the exhibition lille3000 "Ola Cuba! », which presents the works of more than 35 Cuban artists including a dozen of productions.

These artists are painters, photographers, video artists, visual artists, graphic designers, architects ... They have the particularity of being born in Cuba between the end of the 60's and the mid-80's, to have done their career in the 1990s, at the time of the "Special Period" declared by Fidel Castro 25 years ago. Resulting from the consequences of the dislocation of the Soviet bloc, this era denies an important economic crisis for the island that depended on the support of the USSR.

The artists of "Ola Cuba!" are part of this generation, at once bruised but proud, faithful to her country in which she puts her hope and her creative energy, refusing to leave it.

Under an embargo imposed on Cuba by the United States in 1961, these artists are carrying a freedom of expression still fragile but unprecedented, which exceeds the contours of the possible. With great subtlety, they tackle the difficult question of memory but also of openness to the world and other models, to other dreams. They move the lines, by their strengthened will to create.

Sensitive, committed, enlightened, funny, diversified, their works speak about History, architecture, ethnic diversity, landscapes of skies, lands and seas, migrations, isolation, music, colors, inheritances and breaks.

This exhibition also takes all its consistency in the news, with the recent death of Fidel Castro in 2016, but also the uncertain relations with the United States since the arrival of Donald Trump and despite the announced rapprochement between the two countries at the end of the Obama administration.

Cuba lives an important period of its history; the artists of the exhibition are not only the witnesses, they forge their own vision, they are the bearers of messages and the creators of new horizons.
