MARLENE DUMAS - OPEN-END

PALAZZO GRASSI - PINAULT COLLECTION - VENISE

Palazzo Grassi is hosting a major, one-person exhibition devoted to the work of Marlene Dumas as part of the Pinault Collection’s cycle of monographic shows of contemporary artists that began in 2012.

Titled open-end and conceived by the artist together with Caroline Bourgeois, this exhibition represents the first-ever presentation of the entire pictorial production of Marlene Dumas, born in South Africa and living in the Netherlands since 1976.

This first-ever monographic exhibition includes more than one hun- dred works, with a selection of paintings and drawings, starting in 1984 and arriving at the present day. Some of the pieces, shown here for the first time, were produced in these last few years, often by using existing images that the artist “reactivates” through the act of painting. Through these stolen, scrutinised, interpreted, and reinvested images, Marlene Dumas reinvents the human figure, vigorously reinserting it within the history of painting.
