ISAMU NOGUCHI

LAM - VILLENEUVE D'ASQ

Designer of the famous Japanese Akari lamps and the iconic Coffee Table, Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is ususally associated to design in the collective imagination. Yet, he is first and foremost an "absolute" artist which prolific work ranges from sculpture, drawing, painting, scenography and design to landscaping and architecture.

On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the LaM hosts the first ever great retrospective in France dedicated to the American-Japanese artist.

Evolving throughout his life between East and West, committed to the upmost traditional craftsmanship as to most avant-garde discoveries, Noguchi is one of the great pioneers of the decompartmentalisation of the arts and their integration into our living environment.

The various aspects of his personalities are reveleas in this exceptional exhibition, co-organised with the Barbican Center (London), the MuseĢe Ludwig (Cologne) and the Zentrum Paul Klee (Berne), in close relation with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum (New York).
