"In the main in the more "
Exhibition by Beatrice Bonino
With works by Lutz Bacher, Matt Browning, Gianni Colombo, Giuseppe Desiato, Marisa Merz, Dieter Roth
In her primarily sculptural practice, Beatrice Bonino rejects the extraordinary, the monumental, and the spectacular, favoring instead the banality of the everyday. Intuitively drawn to what is neglected or ignored, the artist is interested in chance and fortuitous encounters. Sensitive to the discarded materials found in hardware stores and wholesale shops, Beatrice Bonino collects fragments with contrasting textures—hard and soft, thick and thin, translucent and opaque, sticky and slippery. Her practice then unfolds through the assembly of these disparate elements, which, by their very nature, were hardly destined to coexist. The materials are juxtaposed, nailed, taped, hot-glued, wrapped, or fixed in compositions with fluctuating degrees of visibility. To discover the details that are slightly obscured, half-hidden, or barely perceptible, the spectator is invited to invest their full attention.
For her first major institutional exhibition, the artist, heir to the Minimalist tradition as well as the gestures of Arte Povera, sought the guidance of art historian Catherine David, initiating a dialogue that will also result in the contextualization of her production with historical works.
