Arash Nassiri, a French artist of Iranian origin born in Teheran in 1986, has been based in Berlin for several years now, after living in London, Geneva and Paris. He carries a persistent inquiry with him and in his work, into the way in which identity is constructed. It is doubtless this line of questioning that led him so regularly to Los Angeles, a city where artificiality is one form of authenticity among others. In the City of Angels, and specifically in the coveted neighbourhood of Beverly Hills, Arash explored “Persian palaces”, built by famous architect Hamid Omrani for wealthy families of the Iranian diaspora.
Cultural syncretism reaches its apogee in these luxury villas that amalgamate, without hierarchy, Versailles-inspired gilt ornaments and neoclassical columns, Oriental furniture and resolutely American comforts. This research – which questions both the formation of the imaginary and the notion of heritage – enabled him to secure a residency at the Villa Albertine in 2024, and is now the subject of unprecedented support between the Chisenhale Gallery in London and the Fondation Pernod Ricard, which will each host a solo exhibition by the artist in turn, in 2026.
