BAS SMETS — LES CLIMATS DU PAYSAGE

LUMA Arles, Parc des Ateliers

Bas Smets is a globally recognised landscape architect whose practice redefines what can be done in the face of climate change. Climates of Landscape, his first exhibition at LUMA Arles, brings together landscape architecture, design, and ecological thinking to demonstrate how urban ecologies can be conceived and constructed. The exhibition invites us to rethink ecosystems and our relationship to the environment. A selection of three major projects shows the ways in which landscape architecture can address the challenges of climate crises. From the enhancement of outdoor comfort and reduction of the apparent temperature around Notre-Dame in Paris, to the creation of an embankment park that mitigates the rise of the water level in Antwerp, to the transformation of the Parc des Ateliers at LUMA Arles into a self-sustaining ecology, the work of Bas Smets reflects a commitment to solution-based design grounded in scientific research. The Parc des Ateliers plays a significant role in the exhibition, becoming a living testimony of the power of landscape architectureas an agent of change.
