Painting, literature, architecture, music, furniture, cinema, fashion, and pop culture: the influence of the Orient has taken many forms in Western culture since the Middle Ages. It has nourished imaginations, artistic styles, and representations that continue to enrich our contemporary societies today.
Drawing on an exceptional collection of works from the Louvre Museum's Department of Islamic Art, the exhibition traces the history of cultural exchanges between the East and the West from the Middle Ages to the present day. It combines these national collections with works inspired by the cultures of the Middle East and the Maghreb.
Through contemporary perspectives, it shows how today's artists are questioning these myths and this heritage.
The exhibition rewrites the history of Orientalism over time, providing a better understanding of its evolution and forms in art and in our societies. From the Alhambra to Egypt, it offers a journey between two worlds, where artists, objects, and imaginations meet.
