The CAPC presents a monographic exhibition by artist Alexandra Birken, a major figure in the German art scene. In her primarily sculptural work, she explores the mechanisms of protection, identification, and extension of the individual through analogies between the body and the machine.
On the one hand, the Berlin-based artist combines a multitude of gestures and materials, particularly woven or knitted textiles, to scrutinize the boundary between the human body and its manufactured environment. On the other hand, she dissects everyday technical objects with surgical precision to highlight the biomorphism of machines.
This dual approach gives rise to an ambivalent body of work, both cyborg and androgynous, which questions human behavior and desires, but also the vulnerability of bodies in their relationship with technology.
