IN THE SERVICE OF THE TSARS - THE RUSSIAN IMPERIAL GUARD, FROM PETER THE GREAT TO THE OCTOBER REVOLUTION

MUSEE DE L'ARMEE, PARIS, FRANCE

This fall, as part of the France-Russia Year 2010, the musée de l’Armée (Army Museum) in Paris and the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, are jointly presenting an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Russian Imperial Guard, and more broadly to the history of Russia.

For over two hundred years, from the 1700 to the October Revolution in 1917, the history of the Russian Imperial Guard has been closely tied to that of Russia, not only in relations to the military, but also in the political, social and cultural fields, providing an accurate mirror image of its wealth and complexity.

This exhibition, the result of a new collaboration between the two institutions, will allow for the greater public to see over 150 objects of exceptional and sumptuous characteristics: paintings (landscapes and portraits), personal items and uniforms belonging to key figures, weapon (sabres, pistols...) and art objects (tea service…). The greater part of these objects comes from the Hermitage Museum, some of which had never yet left national soil. Those coming from the collection of the musée de l’Armée and the musée des Cosaques (Cossacks Museum) in Courbevoie, evoke the future of the Guards after 1917 and the exile of great Russian families to Paris.

These two centuries of history narrate in 8 sections:

1/ The birth of the Imperial Guard – Peter I the Great

2/ Plotting at the palace – the Guard at the heart of Society

3/ The Napoleonic Wars

4/ The Decembrists

5/ Nicholas I - Splendour of the Guard

6/ Keeping the Throne: the reigns of Alexander II and Alexander III

7/ The October Revolution

8/ Relics
