KIM GORDON. STORIES FOR A BODY

Collection Lambert - Avignon

In 2026, the Lambert Collection will present a program featuring almost exclusively female artists. We recall that the 2013 exhibition *Les Papesses* already served as an opportunity to highlight major figures and to implicitly address the historical inequalities that have long limited women’s visibility in the art world. The 2026 exhibition program aims to enrich our collective perspective by opening the space to diverse, situated, and engaged narratives from international artists.

The first monographic exhibition in France dedicated to Kim Gordon, a multidisciplinary New York artist known as a founding member of the band Sonic Youth, will present a multifaceted body of work with a raw and instinctive aesthetic, at the intersection of visual art, music, and performance.
At the Collection Lambert, she takes over all the rooms in the basement of the Hôtel de Montfaucon. There, she presents a wide selection of works from the past ten years, including several never-before-seen pieces. Organized as a total installation, the collection of paintings, watercolors, sculptures, and videos explores the place of human beings in a world governed by technological fetishism and the glorification of the commodity, where the political and the intimate are irrevocably intertwined, and where the performative body emerges as a powerful form of potential resistance.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of screenings and performances during the 2026 Avignon Festival, in collaboration with choreographer and dancer Dimitri Chamblas, who has worked with the American artist on numerous occasions, notably at the Louvre Museum, the MOCA in Los Angeles, and the Théâtre National de la Danse in Chaillot.
